Abruzzo

The mountains of Abruzzo lie in the central apennines and at the Adriatic Sea. They border on the Marches, the Latium and the Molise. The landscape is undulating and mountainous, since this is where the highest mountain of the apennines lies – the Gran Sasso. Vineyards of about 34.000 hectare are cultivated here. The sunny position of the hills, sufficient rainfall, a mild climate and the mountain massifs, that limit the temperature changes, yield an intensive wine. The different soils – limy, sandy, loamy and gravelly soils – generate a high quality and an unmistakable taste of the wines. Since the antique times there are even legends about the healing effect of the wine of the mountains of Abruzzo. Popular red wines are the dry Cabernet, the fruity Merlot and the Pinot Nero. Popular whites are the light Passerina and the dry Riesling.
