In this wine region, the cultivation of wine is possible only through artificial irrigation, the term Karoo is derived from “kuru”, meaning dry. Sheep and ostrich farming is mainly carried out here. Cultivation is done on an area of about 3,000 hectares and three-quarters are white grapes such as Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Colombard, Muscat of Alexandria and Sauvignon Blanc. With the reds, there are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage, Ruby Cabernet and Shiraz. Sweet dessert wines and fortified wines are also produced.
